Dumfries and Galloway

Cycling & Mountain Biking

The bicycle was invented in this part of Scotland which is not surprising as the beautiful land and seascapes make cycling the perfect way to get around and view this wonderful place. With lots of off-road trails and miles and miles of quiet country roads it is much safer for the cyclist although all the normal precautions should be taken.

For those days when the legs are a little tired you'll even find the only museum in Scotland devoted to the history of cycling: Drumlanrig Castle. See the magnificent collection of bikes, dating from the 19th Century to the present day.

More than 130 miles of the National Cycle network can be found in the region taking in all the stunning scenery, rugged coastline and vast forests. The National Byway will also lead you to Keir Mill, where Kirkpatrick Macmillan first invented the bicycle. If you are looking for something a little more challenging you will find it in Galloway Forest park where a great deal of investment has been made to provide cycle trails for Mountain bikers.
